Hilliard also serves on Redbirds for Alter, the university student athlete group that’s searching to increase advocacy for Black athletes on campus.

Hilliard said she appreciates her coach, Leah Johnson, reaching out to her throughout the racial unrest soon after George Floyd’s murder to have numerous lengthy discussions about racial justice.

“There’s been those horror tales about (athletes) and their coaches not supporting them and I imagined that was the scariest thing,” Hilliard stated. “So when my mentor approached me (saying) this is some thing we require to communicate about inside of the athletic local community, I was all for it.”

Hilliard said the conversation has absent past the volleyball workforce to incorporate other scholar athletes, coaches and athletics administration. Hilliard included it’s vital for college student athletes to step out of their comfort and ease zone and get concerned in some project or induce exterior of their activity.
